Substantivation of the adjective in medical terminology (on examples from Latin, French and Russian languages)

https://doi.org/10.48612/astgmu/2022-2-1-19-27

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the formation of substantive adjectives in Latin, Russian and French as a result of the communicative and cognitive function in medical terminology. In the process of communication in binominal terms N+Adj, the noun ellipses, the adjective receives the referential meaning of the entire binomial term and the status of a noun. The derivation of substantiated adjectives from the construction N+Adj gives grounds to call it an elliptic construction. An analysis of examples from dictionaries and media texts showed that the lexicalization of substantiated adjectives takes place differently in each language and not for the same terms.
