Recipient-oriented translation: towards identity of consciousness

Abstract

This study proposes a new phenomenological model of translation activity, based on the philosophy of Edmund Husserl. The central problem is overcoming the communicative asymmetry between the broad horizon of the translator’s consciousness, possessing deep linguistic and cultural knowledge, and the narrow, utilitarian horizon of the recipient’s consciousness, which is oriented towards solving specific tasks. The aim of the work is to theoretically substantiate a recipient-oriented approach, wherein the success of a translation is measured not by its formal correspondence to the original, but by its ability to become an effective tool for the recipient's action and understanding. To achieve this goal, three key concepts are introduced and elaborated: the «epistemological intensifier» (a proactive mechanism for accumulating knowledge about the recipient's needs), «analogizing apperception» (a cognitive process of projecting onto and adapting to the recipient's horizon), and the «intersubjective agent» (the translator actively constructing a dialogue between the author and the recipient). The model proposes a two-stage process of horizon conver- gence, where the translator voluntarily narrows their professional perspective to accurately target the recipient’s semantic field. The criterion for success is the absence of criticism from the recipi- ent, signaling a phenomenological identity of consciousnesses and the achievement of communicative adequacy.
