Abstract

The purpose of this study is to show what methods of verbalization of Russian referent realities are used by I.S. Turgenev in the French version of his novel «Fathers and Sons» («Pères et enfants»). The assessment of contemporaries presents a general description of the literary style of the Russian writer, the features of which I.S. Turgenev and his co-author L. Viardot tried to preserve it in the French edition. It is demonstrated that literary talent and intuition allowed the authors of the French translation, without relying on existing scientific theories, to achieve a high level of equivalence in describing pictures of the life of the landed nobility on the eve of the peasant reform of 1861. Used by I.S. Turgenev's methods of representing Russian realities are interpreted on the basis of modern translation studies ideas about realities and strategies for their transmission by means of the target language. Realia is considered as a binary term that has a conceptual referential correlation with objective reality and linguistic conceptual content (a system of denotative, significative and connotative meanings). In this regard, in a debatable aspect, it is proposed to distinguish between referent realities and linguistic realities as categories of analysis. The study used methods of description, statistical analysis, identification of linguistic and extralinguistic factors influencing the selection of nominative strategies for verbalizing the realities of the Russian language in the French version of the novel «Pères et enfants». In general, the work illustrates the assessment of P. Mérimée, the author of the preface to the novel «Pères et enfants». According to the French writer’s point of view, the author’s translation of the novel is highly accurate (fort exacte), despite some «losses» in the description of the national color.
