Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the concept «profane». The study is carried out within the framework of theolinguistics. The object of our study is the concept «profane». The study is based on the data from etymological dictionaries. The purpose of the paper is to perform a comparative analysis of the concept «profane» in sociology, philosophy and linguistics. In the paper, various approaches to its interpretation are discussed in detail and the forms of its representation are described. Special attention is paid to the consideration of the concept «profane» in linguistics. The analysis of dictionary entries with the key word «profanus» made it possible to reveal some essential features, in particular, the multiple meanings and paradoxicality of the concept «profane». The semes, forming the scope of this concept, on the one hand (explicitly) indicate the unrelatedness to the sacred; on the other hand (implicitly) demonstrate its signs.
