The role and properties of grammaticalization in the process of forming a class of prepositions (based on the French language)

Abstract
The article discusses the concept of the term grammaticalization, its interpretation by domestic and foreign authors. The problem of correlation of grammaticalization and lexicalization in the process of prepositions formation is touched upon. The purpose of the article is to describe the main characteristics and features of the manifestation of grammaticalization in the formation of French prepositions. During the analysis, methods for describing prepositional units, component analysis (decomposition of the meaning and form of prepositional units into their constituent semantic and grammatical elements); distributional analysis (identification of linear connections of prepositional units, their compatibility) were used. The authors come to the conclusion about the convergent nature of some mechanisms of grammaticalization, the integral properties of which are unidirectionality, gradualism and partiality of the process for a certain form of a preposition in a specific period of language development, therefore only a diachronic approach gives an idea of prepositions as an open class, replenished at each stage of the history of a language new forms in the process of grammaticalization.
