Stylistic variation of prosody in spoken literary discourse

https://doi.org/10.17021/2712-9519-2026-2-73-79

Abstract

One of the key problems of phonostylistic studies is the identification of the sources of prosodic variation in oral speech. Functional and stylistic modifications of English prosody in spoken literary discourse (read-aloud prose) are determined (among other factors) by the “factor of the reader”. Comparative analysis of the prosodic realization of British prose performed by professional actors and untrained readers allows us to demonstrate the significance of this factor in forming phonostylistic features of literary discourse and to establish the role of suprasegmental phonetic means in conveying its expressiveness.
