Abstract

The focus of this article is the neologism monastyring, examined through its structural and linguocultural characteristics. The aim of the analysis is to describe the unique aspects of the word-formation model and to uncover the cultural connections between the denotative content of this new lexical unit and precedent body-spiritual practices. The research employs a comprehensive methodology and is grounded in the concepts of leading Russian scholars in the fields of derivatology and neology. The conclusions indicate the hybrid nature of the word form, where the English suffix -ing, denoting an active process, is attached to the ancient Greek root monastery, which has been assimilated into the Russian language. The semantic scope of the word is established, revealing its linguocultural intersections with Orthodox practices of labor, on one hand, and the Western model of psychological retreats, on the other. In contrast to the semantics of work, which primarily aims to bring one closer to God through obedience, labor, and prayer, monastyring highlights a motivational aspect the desire of the younger generation – to escape from modern civilization.
